An ageless art form
In the time that I have been doing the art of birchbark biting, I have come to understand the truth of why I love to produce birchbark bitings.
It is a presentation of an ageless art form that depicts the connectedness and the continuity of life on Mother Earth.
The relationship of the Great Spirit, nature and human beings are presented in each biting.
Using only my teeth, I produce designs on peeled birch bark.
The flower in the centre representing the Great Spirit, on whom the whole of creation revolves - endlessly.
The bees represent nurturing and sustainability.
The dragonflies represent the positivity of movement through life.
The placement of the designs represents the guardianship and support of one another. Thus the artist gives the world a tangible view and connection to the Indigenous understanding of creation.
